QEII Athol Patterson Bursary

As a result of a bequest to the QEII National Trust from Dr Athol Patterson, a bursary was set up in 2009 to support students at Massey University interested in sustainable farming practices.

Dr Patterson was a doctor of tropical medicines and taught in various universities around the world before retiring to Waverley where he had two small dairy farms.

  1. The bursary shall be called the QEII Athol Patterson Bursary and shall be awarded annually.
  2. The value of the bursary shall be $2,000 each year, and will be awarded in May.
  3. Applicants will have completed their first year of study, and be enrolled in an undergraduate degree at Massey University either in agriculture or environmental management.
  4. In the supporting statement attached to their application, agricultural applicants must clearly show their interest in sustainable farming practices, and environmental management applicants must show an interest in dealing with sustainability issues in agriculture. The academic ability of applicants will also be considered.
  5. A short-list of suitable applicants will be compiled by the Applied Academic Programmes Scholarships Committee, and provided to the QEII National Trust who will make the final decision.
  6. In making a recommendation for this award the Committee shall take into account other scholarships, bursaries and awards held by the candidates, with a view to achieving a fair distribution of monies among qualifying candidates.
  7. If there are no applicants of sufficient merit the Scholarships Committee may refrain from making an award.
  8. Applications close with the Scholarships Office, Graduate Research School, Massey University, on 10 March.
