The Kowhai Reach stretch of Winton Stream is protected with covenants by Louise Shand-Wilson and Wally Wilson, Richard, John and Ann England, Joelrosa Limited, Terry and Louise Forde and the Southland District Council.
Limehills School students have assisted with enhancing the reserve including planting native species such as eco-sourced Teucridium parvifolium (GD) and Olearia lineata (S).
On World Environment Day in June 2008 at the opening of a circular public track developed with funding from the council, Mayor Frana Cardno congratulated the students for their contributions.
